Injecting Design into the Core, Rethinking High School Curricula Please Register!

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity seats available

While educators have access to many examples of project-based design activities, few, if any, resources exist demonstrating how design can be practically implemented throughout the academic year.  frog would like to harness the knowledge and energy of the IxD community to fill this gap by facilitating the collaborative redesign of a high school lesson and gain insights for creating a design imbued high school curriculum.  The workshop will center around 3-4 teams, each focusing on a core subject area and teacher. At the end of the workshop, teachers will walk away with actionable recommendations and personal connections to IxD professionals. The IxD community will have a firm grasp on the challenges and opportunities of further injecting design methodology into the classroom.

MATERIALS

+ Sample lesson plan per curriculum per core area

+ Sample lesson materials

INTRO + BREAK INTO GROUPS (5 MINUTES)

ACTIVITY 1: UNDERSTAND (10 MIN)

Each group will gain an understanding of the their teacher’s unique school situation and pain points. This will be through a guided interview lead by a group member while other group members record and visualize observations.

ACTIVITY 2: GENERATE (30 MINUTES)

Each group will map out the current lesson plan (customer journey) from beginning to end, including objectives, lesson activities, and pain points.

ACTIVITY 3: BUILD (45 MINUTES)

Each group will design a new lesson plan by injecting design principals map out and build the new lesson plan on butcher paper on the wall. Groups will build any materials needed for the lesson. The goal is to inject design skills, including building empathy, prototyping, and feedback.

BREAK (5 MINUTES)

ACTIVITY 4: SHARE (30 MINUTES)

New “tour groups” are formed which are made up of one person from each of the previous groups. Groups spend 5 minutes at each lesson created by the other group and must “teach” their tour group.

ACTIVITY 5: REFLECT (30 MINUTES)

Using affinity mapping the whole group will reflect on what we’ve learned.

+ What were challenges you faced?

+ What worked well?

+ What patterns did you observe across core subjects?

+ Where are the best opportunities to inject design in the core?

+ What are the next steps for IxD as a community?

WRAP UP (5 MINUTES)
